The work programme has included the production of data on the patterns of
alcohol consumption and related harms in the region, evidence of what works
to reduce alcohol consumption and information of where alcohol prevention
fits in to regional policy. A significant development has been the
establishment of the Regional alcohol indicators for the NW, which is a
dataset measuring consumption patterns and alcohol related harm at a Local
Authority level throughout the North West.
The launch of the new National Alcohol Strategy – "Safe Sensible and
Social" has provided added impetus to the work of the region,
with an emphasis on substance use activity and young people. The strategy
also introduces a performance management role for the GO and Regional
Public Health to ensure that local strategies are affecting change for
their population. The Home Office have identified 50 alcohol harm priority
areas in England and Wales, 6 of which are in the North West
Blackpool, Burnley, Halton, Manchester, Pendle and Salford. These areas
sometimes receive extra support to help them tackle the causes and effects
of alcohol related problems.
