Biomass and Woodfuel

Government Office for the North West chairs the Biomass Contacts Group which is a group of mainly public sector organisations with the aim of promoting the uptake of biomass and woodfuel in the region.

The policy drivers include the Energy White Paper 2003 and the Planning Policy 22 Renewable Energy.  Biomass and woodfuel can contribute to the renewable energy generation mix. The production of heat from biomass combustion is the most effective and efficient use.

To support these policies, the Biomass Contacts Group, including Government Office for the North West, Northwest Regional Development Agency, the Forestry Commission, The Community Forests, Natural England and the National Farmers Union, has created a North West Woodfuel and Biomass Strategy and Action Plan.  The Action Plan is embedded within the North West Regional Forestry Framework and is linked with the NWDA Climate Change Action Plan.

The Action Plan will target public funding for the installation of biomass boilers and assist in the development of the supply chain for biomass production.
