Government Offices have an important role in helping the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) deliver its education strategy for the next five years and beyond. It focuses on giving children an excellent start in education, enabling young people to equip themselves with life and work skills, and encouraging adults to achieve their full potential through learning.

We have a lot to be proud of: our education system is now among the best in the world, teaching standards have never been higher and a record number of students go to university.
But there is still a great deal to do in the North West, particularly to:
- raise attainment levels at all the key stages of education, particularly key stages 3 and 4
- reduce levels of persistent absence and the numbers of permanent exclusions from schools
- raise basic skill levels in adults
Government Office for the North West works with local authorities, education institutions and other learning and skills organisations and partnerships in the region to address these priorities and to implement key government strategies, notably the five year strategy for Children and Learners published by the then Department for Education and Skills in 2004.
