Regional Development Agencies: the National Picture

Government Offices (GOs) work with the nine Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) .

GOs are responsible for:

  • relationship management of each of the RDAs
  • supporting RDAs to deliver current regional economic strategies to support increased and sustainable economic growth
  • provide support and advice on RDA chair and board appointments
  • contribute to RDA performance assessment
  • work with RDA and BIS to ensure that RDA major projects are appropriate through early identification of problems, provision of regional intelligence to BIS and senior level dialogue
  • ensure RDAs account for cross-regional and national priorities as set out in the  ‘Partnerships for Growth’ paper published in December 2009, including sectoral priorities and initiatives such as Low Carbon Economic Areas
  • Support development by the RDA of new regional skills strategies ensuring integration with Regional Strategeis and support transition to new skills delivery structures.

Government Offices work with the BIS to appoint new board members to the RDAs. Panels in each region made up of the Regional Director of the Government Office and the Chair of the RDA, with an independent assessor. The panel selects the candidates for interview and then submits their recommendations for appointment to BIS ministers.

BIS is keen that the panels reflect the diversity of each region, and are eager to receive applications from women, people with disabilities and black, minority ethnic people. The recruitment process is carried out in accordance with guidance issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
