Business and Industry: the National Picture

Government Offices (GOs) represent the interests of 12 government departments in the English regions. They support the departments’ aims of improving economic performance, skills, productivity and innovation. By influencing the priorities set by Government and regional partners for the regional economic development, we assist in their effective delivery.

Business

Business, enterprise and innovation are important to the economic success of the English regions, creating wealth and opportunity on which the country’s social, economic and environmental well-being depends.

Government Offices have a role in ensuring that regional barriers to growth are understood. We identify current issues affecting business and provide feedback to departments related to their policy responsibilities.

Businesses looking for help and guidance, or people looking for help on setting up a new business, can be found from your local Business Link. For assistance on international trade, contact UK Trade and Investment.

Skills

A skilled and flexible workforce is vital to the success of businesses in a region, and the economic prosperity of the region as a whole. The GOs role is to support development of new regional skills strategies, including ensuring integration with Regional Strategies and supporting transition to new skills delivery structures.

Delivering for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)

Most GOs have an ongoing responsibility for closure of the 2000-2006 ERDF Programme for the eligible areas within their region. These Programmes included sustainable support measures which aligned with similar activities supported through ‘Support for Business’ programmes, delivered by Business Link and other public sector agencies.

Key objectives of GOs related to business are to:

  • support business and people in building the recovery
  • ensure development of Regional Strategies which support economic growth
  • implement effective sub-regional and local mechanisms to support economic growth
  • support a business friendly environment
  • ensure the RDA supports economic growth effectively
  • support the implementation and consolidation of Business Support Service Programme (BSSP) – Solutions for Business – at sub-national levels and work with partners to ensure Business Link is positioned as the entry point for BSSP.
