Economy - Shoppers on Market Street, Manchester

Economy

We work closely with a range of organisations which have business interests and specialisms to promote Government policy in the region and to feed back the unique needs of the North West so that these influence central Government policy making.

Government Offices (GOs) work with Government departments and other partners to strengthen the economy in every region, working to reduce the gap in economic growth rates between the regions and ensure all regions are in the best position to recover from the economic downturn. More information on the national picture

Our role in the region includes both sponsoring and monitoring the effectiveness of the Northwest  Regional Development Agency, and working to improve the understanding by businesses, institutions, local authorities and other strategic bodies in the North West of the Government's economic policy.

Our work involves many key regional partners including:

  • Northwest Regional Development Agency
  • Local Authorities
  • Young People's Learning Agency
  • Skills Funding Agency
  • Business Link
  • UK Trade and Investment

Sub-regional Partnerships

Improving regional economic performance and delivering prosperity for all is a key objective for Government Office for the North West. The Northern Way Growth Strategy  highlights the gap in prosperity and productivity between the three northern regions and the English average.

The Regional Strategy RS2010

In July 2007 the Government published the Review of the Sub-National Economy and Regeneration which included reforms to streamline arrangements at the regional level. The aim of the reforms was to bring together economic development and spatial planning and try to address the fragmentation of strategies and organisations at the regional level. The proposed approach is to replace them with a Single Regional Strategy.

A skilled and flexible workforce is essential to keep businesses competitive and for individuals to be employable.  The Regional Skills Partnership has the task of improving adult skills in the region.  The Partnership involves Government Office for the North West, Northwest Regional Development Agency and other regional organisations, employers and adult skills providers.
