Purdah

The period of time from when an election is announced until after the election is held is informally known as purdah. The basic principle is that any activity which could call into question their political impartiality or could give rise to the criticism that public resources are being used for Party political purposes is suspended for this time.

However, this does not mean that the business of government ceases. Enquiries made to public bodies will still be answered, although there may be some reprioritisation and extra checks made at this time. Certain activities, such as advertising and research may be curtailed as appropriate.
